Pokemon is aimed at kids so the story isn't particularly deep while FE and DQ are aimed at a higher age grouping (mid teens and up) and have more complex stories with DQ games tending to be more goofy than serious. When playing through the game you can pretty much just use your starter and smash through everything like you could in pretty well every main Pokemon game.Īs for story Sun/Moon have come along way since the early Pokemon games but to compare it to games like FE, SMT and DQ it will never stand up. The battle system in Pokemon is only complex when you're talking about online battles against human opponents. Dragon Quest has a lot of cutesy monsters and interesting stories, so does SMT (and judging from FE Fates: Birthright, Fire Emblem does, too). Pokemon has lots of great Pokemon to choose for your party, SMT has lots of cool demons/personas to fuse or recruit. They're all unique games that cross in a few ways, but are also very very different from each other. Not sure how well I got my points across and if I did poorly, I apologize. There's always a team (Team Rocket the gangsters, Team Skull the gangstas, Team Plasma the pokemon rights nuts, Team Galaxy the weirdos trying to end the world) that gets in your way and causes trouble, generally leading to you getting the legendary on the cover of your Pokemon game. go collect badges and Pokemon and beat the elite four' and that's it.

Story-wise, SMT is darker than either Pokemon Sun/Moon or Dragon Quest, but from playing Dragon Quest V (and IV), I know the series can get a little dark, itself.ĭragon Quest has interesting stories for their games (I adore DQV for this very reason) much like SMT and Fire Emblem, but Pokemon is generally 'you're a kid, you're going on an adventure. Generally speaking, you'll be focusing more on getting the most powerful demons, though, as eventually you will be grinding a ridiculous amount of experience to keep a weaker demon up with later demons. SMT and Pokemon share similarities in that you collect Pokemon for your favorites and you can (generally) do the same thing with demons/personas in the Shin Megami Tensei games through fusion and recruitment.

SMT's combat isn't that different from Dragon Quest's and I'd liken the three games (SMT, DQ, FE) as being more maturely themed compared to Pokemon.
